Abdul Basit Abdul Samad (1927–1988) was one of the most famous Quran reciters from Egypt. He was born in a village called Armant in the Qena Governorate of Upper Egypt. He memorized the entire Quran at a young age and trained in Tajweed (rules of Quranic recitation) under skilled teachers.
He was known for his powerful, melodious voice and his deep control over maqamat—the musical tones used in Quranic recitation. His style combined precision with emotion, making his recitations deeply moving and spiritually uplifting.
Abdul Basit became the first Qari to recite at the United Nations in 1970 and received many international awards. His recordings are still loved around the world, and he is often called the “Golden Voice of the Quran.
